Once upon a time I would sit on the floor at the six foot long wooden stereo cabinet at my aunt’s house and flip through her collection of vinyl. This collection included bands like Kool and the Gang, The Ohio Players, The Main Ingredient, Sly Stone, The Isley Brothers and so many more. This music was brought to life on television every Saturday with Don Cornelius and Soul Train. Disco balls, bell bottoms and the dynamic Soul Train line fueled my imagination of a night life filled with smiling faces shaking to the rhythm of classic soul music.
GG & Friends took me back to those memories with some covers of music from that time and their original music. GG & Friends is an old school funk band lead by Glenn “GG” Gordon.
The band kicked off the night with three originals from Glenn “GG” Gordon’s 2012 album Exposures. “You Should Be My Lady”, “You Ought To Be In Movies” and “I Can’t Live Like This” are 21st century songs with that soulful combination of funk, rythm and blues and jazz that made the 70s such an amazing time for music. This is the kind of music that blue lights in the basement house parties the place to be every week!
As promised they rounded out there set with some covers from Frankie Beverly & Maze, The Ohio Players, The Staple Singers and The Isley Brothers.
