SXSW 2018: Vundabar’s “Diver”

Boston rockers Brandon Hagen, Drew McDonald, and Zack Abramo make up Vundabar, one of the bands SXSW Music Festival attendees will be fortunate enough to get to see and hear. The band has been putting out music for almost five years now, and with two full-length albums – 2012’s Antics and Gawk, released last May –they are showing no signs of slowing down.

Their latest single is “Diver,” and it was released in December. It is grungier than nada, with a bouncing bassline that feels like an evening stroll on cobblestone streets and vocals delivered so intimately, it feels like being at a show where you can smell cigarette smoke on the singer. The drums are big and loud, the kind of thing that blasts musicians into a position to be worshipped. The song is, to put it briefly, exquisite.

Vundabar is touring with Ratboys through March and April, with shows all over the country and a couple dates in Canada. Catch them at SXSW in March. Until then, check out their music. Be prepared for something good.
