INTERVIEW: Love Songs and Breakup Songs with Chelsea Shag

Former pro wake boarder Chelsea Shag was born in a blizzard in Novia Scotia. Fortunately, for those of us that love her music, she set aside the wake board and picked up her first Fender electric guitar.  Chelsea Shag’s parents had an eclectic taste in music and shows up in the blend of rock, funk, soul and hip hop that comes out in her music.  You will find the same eclectic taste when it comes to her favorite love songs and breakup songs.

I don’t have a favorite break up song… wait, well actually no I do.  [laughter] It’s not necessarily a breakup song but the lyrics of this song will make me cry no matter my mood because it is so sad.   It’s the John Mayer song “In Your Atmosphere.” [sings]I don’t think I’m gonna go to LA anymore/ I don’t know what it’s like to land/ And not race to your door

There are so many love songs. If I had to choose it would be a Stevie Wonder song because he captures that feeling of love in his music.

When it comes to the soundtrack of my life, there is a playlist for everything. There is one for love making, there is one for dinners.  Kara and I have so many playlists.   We were flipping through music the other night.  Music from the 90’s and early 2000’s.  These songs come on and I’m an back to that time in my life.  It will just take you back to a very special place.  There are some songs that will come on and I’ll say “Oh, God please change it.” but when some other songs come on I get the warmest of fuzzy feelings inside.  It’s wonderful to have a friend that you share a song with so that they can always be with you when you hear that song.

For Valentine’s Day I like to just celebrate loving each other.  I wish that one of my upcoming songs, “Funk Love” was out for Valentine’s Day.  “Funk Love” is about feeling the ecstasy of love and always wanting to hold onto that feeling.  I love the outro of that song [sings] Baby I wanna ride with cha, baby live the live with ya, baby I’m ride or die with you, Baby I wanna fly with you  I just want to do everything with you.

This spring Chelsea Shag will be releasing a new EP,”Satellites”, with five poppy funky songs.  And then later this year she will be releasing a raw blues, rock and R&B full length album.  Until then have some fun with “New Perfume” from her 2016 project Colours.  Every girl loves a bit of new perfume, especially when it comes from the one you love.

If you haven’t shared you favorite love song and favorite break up song we would love to hear from you.  On Valentine’s Day I will pick my favorites from the submissions and give away t-shirts, stickers and tickets to an upcoming show.
