Catching Atlanta’s Local Legends was the beginning of another great night of music at MadLIfe Stage and Studios in downtown Woodstock Georgia. MadLife is showing that their ability to book great bands is exceptional and consistent. Consistently booking great bands is how to be a successful local live music venue in this day and age. Local Legends is made up of Steve Pace (drums), Tony Vaughn (bass/vocals), Viki Pinyan (keyboards/vocals), Greg Henderson (guitar/vocals) and Spencer Kirkpatrick (guitar).
I’ve always wanted to see Spencer, the lead guitar player of Local Legends, perform. I arrived in Atlanta in 1990 and missed out on seeing so many hot southern rock bands. One of those great southern rock bands, Hydra, had Spencer on guitar. After hearing about Hydra from my friend and fellow musican Barry Richman, off I went to watch and listen to “Hydra Rock the World”, the band’s 1977 release and yep, pretty bad ass. Having the Internet and YouTube at our fingertips is fantastic, I love how one can search to find music and artists we missed.
As I have gotten to know Spence, I go back and forth with teasing him that we of a certain age are expertly “seasoned.” After all, you can’t be 30 and be called a legend. I’m always going to be envious and grateful to those who came before me, who were able to not only experience the ground breaking music of classic rock and southern rock, but they were able to create, contribute and be a part of it as well. The band members of Local Legends are those folks and keep that going with set lists of classic favorites performed by pros who were there as it happened. Credence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Grand Funk Railroad, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Steppenwolf, Mothers Finest to name only a few.
Who’s in the band?
Spencer Kirkpatrick on lead guitar, has toured the world with some of the biggest names in Classic Rock: ZZ Top, Procol Harum, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many others while with he and Steve Pace’s band Hydra, and Spencer even opened for the Beatles at their only GA appearance back in 1965, does it get cooler than that?
Steve Pace is a pretty diverse musician (drummer/composer) from playing with The Wiggles (my daughter loved them as a kid) to hard metal band Krokus.
Tony Vaughn, on bass and vocals, has played in several popular Atlanta Bands through the years and throughout the southeast.
Viki Pinyan, keyboards and vocals, comes from a musical family and has performed with several great blues rock groups.
Greg Henderson, guitar and vocals, has played for the past 40 years in the North Georgia area and was a member of the Neon Cowboy band for over 18 years who also owns, AVG: Atlanta’s Vintage Guitars in Marietta Ga. which is always a cool place to look through the inventory if you’re a collector, appreciate vintage guitars or want to stop by and say hi to Spencer and Greg.
