The Pussywillows at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur

It was a dark and stormy night in Decatur, Georgia, as I ventured out with friends to hear The Pussywillows at Eddie’s Attic.  Since it’s opening in 1991, Eddie’s Attic has been named “Best Place to Hear Live Music” (Jezebel); “Best Acoustic Music Venue” (Creative Loafing); and “Best Place to Hear Local Music” (GA Voice).  DSC09124-1 Part of what makes Eddie’s Attic so special is the quality sound system and intimate atmosphere but, part of what truly makes it special is it being a “listening room” where the crowd is there to hear the music without the distractions of cell phones or chatter.  As I awaited the transition from the earlier show to the late show, I had a chance to chat with a number of other music lovers in the waiting area.  During those conversations I found that I was in wonderful company with other fans of local music as we shared stories about local venues and other places to hear emerging artists.  Most of the crowd was here to see Caroline Aiken but The Pussywillows were what brought me out on this rainy night in Georgia.

Not to be confused with the 80’s retroband, this Georgia crafted version of The Pussywillows made up of Carly Gibson and Hannah Zale are an Americana duet.  Describing The Pussywillows as an Americana duet certainly does them justice.  The American Music Association describes Americana music as music that ” incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw.”   The Pussywillows passionately blend a bit of each of these musical styles into their music and forge them into something powerfully beautiful.  Hannah Zale’s vocals are strong and she uses them to lift you off your feet or to dig deep down into your soul.  Carly Gibson is captivating as she shreds on guitar and has a voice that simmers like the hot coals in a bonfire.  Together the pair are a great duo with harmonies that blend perfectly and their original music highlights each of their talents.  I am blessed to have had the chance to see and hear them up close and personal at Eddie’s Attic.  Carly and Hannah, The Pussywillows, are talented singers, song writers and musicians that I expect will grown in fame here in Atlanta and around the globe.
